For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Kelsey Fehr. My husband, Ethan, and I raise meat goats in northern Iowa. Our goat farm started out small with just a handful of goats right before we got married in 2018. After having them for a few months I quickly convinced my husband That we should expand our herd. We slowly started bringing in larger groups to increase our herd size until we both got to a number that we were comfortable with.
In February of 2019 we decided I would quit my teaching job to become a stay at home mom. I started thinking about what I could do from home to keep myself busy. Quickly my heart told me; you love everything about raising goats, it is time to increase the herd again. It is something I love to do, and I can bring our children along with me when I am working outside.
In the fall of 2021 we bought our last large group of goats to bring us to our desired herd size. To say I was excited about this is an understatement. My dreams of having a large goat operation were finally coming true.
I knew I would want a way to document how our operation grew and evolved over time, so I began our Facebook and Instagram pages to post pictures and videos to share not only for myself to reflect on, but to share with friends and family. About a year later, with a little encouragement from family members, the vlog was born. And man is it out of my comfort zone!
I am not here to teach you how to raise your goats. I am not an expert. I do not have all the answers. I am still learning every day. Goats are fascinating creatures who amaze me every day, and teach me something new. When we started growing our herd I often tired to find others who were raising meat goats like me to help answer my many questions. However, I quickly found myself chasing my tail through the many different answers I would get. Many of which were negative comments as to what I was doing wrong, and had little to no value to the questions I was asking. Some were even telling me I would fail.
I hated getting responses like this. I do not want other producers to feel that way. I am here to share my successes, failures, and regrets. I feel we learn best from watching those around us. Looking back through my videos and pictures I also have a chance to learn from myself, and see the progress we have made.
I am still learning. We are approaching our 6 year mark of raising goats, and I can definitely say I do not have it all figured out. But I hope you all enjoy going on this journey with me.
